William Kooeinga

Bio
Originally from Michigan, taught special ed for several years after graduating from Western Michigan. After visiting European art galleries and backpacking to Indian and Nepali temples, have been self-taught full-time sculptor for over 40 years. Work can be seen at LeQuire gallery in Nashville. Have pieces in Tennessee State Museum and several sculptures in residential side of Four Seasons Hotel downtown Nashville.

Describe your art/craft (medium, process, etc).
I work primarily with indigenous wood and stone; monumental to hand size pieces. Also have done metal casting, forging, and welding. Have a natural inclination to flowing, sensual lines and surfaces, mostly non-figurative. Also one-off furniture pieces, bowls and utensils.

What drives you to make your art/craft?
Have been inclined to carving since seventh grade, carved ice and local alabaster in Grand Rapids MI. Even though I majored in drafting at Western Michigan, I spent all my free time in the art department… Focused for 10 years on photography, with my own darkroom. Sculpture comes naturally… the wonder of seeing shape & form come from I don’t know where is humbling. Am simply driven to the creative process!

Who or what are your greatest influences?
Nature! Beauty! People!

How does living in Tennessee influence and inspire your art?
Tennessee has more tree species than any other state. Our 100 acre hollow is as beautiful as any place I have been on earth.

Beyond your art/craft, what are your other interests?
Have a deep drive as spiritual seeker. Have studied all major spiritual paths and see the core truth of all major world religions. We are all one, the separate self is illusion.

Anything else you want to share?
Love the service aspect of Off the Beaten Path Studio Tour! I enjoy experiencing the joy and enthusiasm of tour participants… the energy is inspiring.
