Susan DeMay
I spent ten years in various college programs, developing various art forms, especially clay work; and then 35 years teaching ceramics in various colleges, including Vanderbilt University, and in a number of workshops. I set up my own studio in Smithville about four decades ago.
My most recent work has been inspired by art nouveau, art deco and works from the Arts and Crafts Movement. In my Dutch upbringing, the family home used and showcased family heirlooms of these origins. Decorative, yet functional, such wares populated each room throughout the house. I bring a more painterly look to these aesthetics through the exploration of the fluidity and visual varieties found in electric-fired glaze work.
