Lucas Antoniak
Bio
I was born in a log cabin without running water here in DeKalb County, where, except for a few years in NY as a kid, I've lived my entire life. I went to college at Middle Tennessee State University, worked "normal" jobs for a few years, and I've been as freelance as I can be since 2010. I'm a self-taught artist, illustrator, and cartoonist, and a member of the National Cartoonists Society. I live with my wife and kid in the sticks of DeKalb County, Tennessee. My work has been featured on many posters and t-shirts around middle Tennessee for events like the Smithville Fiddler’s Jamboree. Some of my work also made a brief appearance in Grammy-winning musician Jack White's music video for the song "Corporation."
Describe your art/craft (medium, process, etc).
I draw and paint mostly weird, cartoony things, and my one true love is writing and drawing comics. I also really enjoy the process screen printing when I can. My preferred mediums are pen-and-ink and watercolor, but I sometimes use acrylics, draw/paint digitally, and occasionally dabble in block printing and screen printing. A lot of my art is inspired by... I dunno. You know, it really just kinda happens.
What drives you to make your art/craft?
I've felt compelled to draw since I was a kid. I like the power of art, whether it's for appreciating a quiet moment or speaking truth to power.
Who or what are your greatest influences?
My parents, plus Charles Schulz, Leo Tolstoy, Matt Groening, Gary Larson, Bill Watterson, Robert Crumb, Vincent Van Gogh and the impressionists, Charles Dickens, and an endless list of punk artists and musicians.
How does living in Tennessee influence and inspire your art?
It informs everything.
Beyond your art/craft, what are your other interests?
Paleontology, science and nature, birds, punk music, comics, reading, hiking, and being outside in general. Oh, and UFOs and the paranormal.
Anything else you want to share?
There are no rules.
