Elise Windus
Bio
I have loved science, education and art since I was a child. I pursued science in college and got a degree in Chemistry. I taught high school chemistry and physics for over thirty years. I always drew and painted for leisure. When I left teaching science in the public schools I was able to devote more time to my art. Most recently, a piece of mine was accepted into the 63rd Annual Juried Exhibition of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. in Bee Cave, Texas, near Austin. I’m currently creating paintings inspired by hummingbirds, tulip trees, and irises in my own yard.
Describe your art/craft (medium, process, etc).
I explore Chinese Brush Painting using watercolor & ink on rice paper and underglazes on bisque clayware. This method of painting captures the spirit (Ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic picture.
What drives you to make your art/craft?
The peacefulness and challenge of this magical art form enhances my life.
Who or what are your greatest influences?
As a child, I was always drawing and painting.. My mother saw this enthusiasm and enrolled me in art classes atour local museum, the Fitchburg Art Museum in Massachusetts, where one of my watercolor paintings received honorable mention and was exhibited at the museum. I continued my exploration as an adult and took a variety of classes. While living in Houston I took a class in Chinese Watercolor Painting with internationally known artist Peihong Endris. I fell in love with this medium and took numerous classes with this wonderful artist and teacher. I continued my artistic practice while teaching chemistry and physics in public high schools.
How does living in Tennessee influence and inspire your art?
The enjoyment of the natural beauty in middle Tennessee has inspired my painting. The flowers, waterfalls, birds, bugs, trees, landscapes and critters can be seen throughout my paintings.
Beyond your art/craft, what are your other interests?
I enjoy exploring state and national parks with my husband. While home I spend time with my husband, and family, garden, exercise, play with my dog and read my science magazines.
Anything else you want to share?
Enjoy OTBP!
